Risk of floods again at Chamoli, one more lake created in Rishiganga area

- Consider breaking the lake early to avoid future accidents

Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is still reeling from the tragedy and one more threat is looming over it. A landslide near Mount Trishul caused a glacier to break and heavy flow from the lake caused a catastrophe recently. It has now come to light that a temporary lake is being formed upstream of Rishiganga. If the lake breaks, it could lead to another catastrophe.

Scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in Dehradun have also confirmed the news. The scientists of this institute surveyed the upper areas of Rishiganga by helicopter in which they saw that a new lake was forming. According to the scientists of Wadia Institute, the size of the new lake is 10 to 20 meters.

The exact shape of the lake could not be ascertained due to surveying from a higher altitude but it is certain that if the shape of the lake continues to expand and later it collapses, a huge catastrophe will occur. So if it is already demolished and its water is diverted to another place, the accident can be avoided. According to scientists, the lake may have been formed by debris that came down after the Hanging Glacier broke.

There is no need to panic as there is not much water in the lake at present, according to aerial photos. But it needs to be treated before any such risk arises in the future. The lake is 6 km above the Rishiganga project and is also above Raini village. The Center and the state government have been informed.
