Rising onion prices amid rising petrol-diesel and cooking gas prices have disrupted the household budget. At the same time, the price of onion in the retail market has reached Rs 50 per kg. However, the government hopes that onion revenue will increase in March so prices will fall. At the same time, the central government can deliver onions to the states through buffer stock.

The unseasonal rains in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are the main reason behind the sudden rise in onion prices. Onion crop has deteriorated due to rains and hail in both these regions. As a result, the price of onion in Lasalgaon, Asia's largest market, has reached Rs 4,200 per quintal.

According to a report by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, onion prices in the national capital have gone up by Rs 10 to Rs 15 in 20 days. Prices are expected to fall as onion revenue rises in March but some experts believe onion prices will still rise.
