The microblogging site Twitter has blocked 97 per cent of its accounts following constant pressure from the central government. The Department of Electronics, Information and Technology demanded that several accounts be blocked for posting provocative content. These accounts used hashtags like 'Kisan Jansanhar'.

It was learned that the central government had twice appealed and marked 1,435 accounts, out of which the company has blocked 1,398 accounts. A meeting was held late Wednesday evening between Information and Technology Ministry Secretary Ajay Prakash Sahni and Twitter Public Policy Vice President Monique Meche and Jim Baker.

Following the meeting, the US social media company began taking action against users marked by the government. According to a report by a government source, Twitter has compiled a list of blocked accounts and handed it over to the ministry.

The 1,178 accounts that the central government said were likely to be linked to Pakistan and Khalistan have been blocked. Of the 257 accounts from which the disputed hashtag was executed, 220 have been blocked. Some of those accounts are also suspected to be duplicates, according to a source.
