19 years ago today, in the year 2002, Godhra massacre took place on this very day. Since then today has been recorded in the pages of history with a tragic event. A bogie of Sabarmati Express departing from Godhra station in Gujarat was set on fire by a violent and insane mob. The incident killed 59 car workers returning from Ayodhya and sparked riots across Gujarat.

In fact Hindu pilgrims were returning from Ayodhya by Sabarmati Express. On February 27, 2002, his train reached Godhra station in Panchmahal district of Gujarat. The train started moving as if someone had pulled the chain and stopped the train and then a box of the train was set on fire after being stoned. A fire in the S-6 coach killed 59 people.

Devotees were returning from Ayodhya

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad organized the Purnahuti Mahayagna at Ayodhya in February 2002, which was attended by a large number of devotees. On February 25, 2002, the Sabarmati Express bound for Ahmedabad carried about 1,700 pilgrims and car attendants. The train reached Godhra station at 7:43 am on 27th February and took off shortly after as the train stopped near the signal due to chain pulling. The mob then started a fire.

Riots after Godhra

An FIR was registered against 1,500 people in the incident at Godhra. After this incident, communal violence broke out all over Gujarat and there was heavy loss of life and property. The situation had deteriorated to such an extent that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to appeal to the people to maintain peace. According to government figures, 1,200 people were killed in the riots.
