The Congress has failed to prove a majority in the Puducherry Assembly. On Monday, the speaker of the legislature announced that the government did not have a majority. After which Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy had tendered his resignation to Lt. Governor Tamilisai.

In the Legislative Assembly, the Congress has two MLAs from the DMK and one independent MLA. A total of 11 MLAs and one speaker got the support of 12. While a majority requires 14 MLAs. So Congress has lost the government.

After resigning, Narayanasamy said that former vice-governor Kiran Bedi and the central government had joined hands with the opposition to try to dissolve the government. We have been running the government for the last five years because of our unity. This is the assassination of democracy.

After losing power in Puducherry, the only Congress-ruled states in the country now are Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. While in other states the government is being run by a coalition. With the loss of power in Puducherry, not a single state in South India is ruled by the Congress.

However, assembly elections are going to be held in Puducherry in April-May this year. DMK chief M.K. Stalin also said that the opposition BJP had broken the government by playing a dirty game. He also praised Narayanasamy.

Opposition leader and NR Congress chief N Rangaswamy, on the other hand, said, "We have no desire to form a government as per the current situation and the next plan will be prepared soon for which a meeting is being called."

Earlier, the lieutenant governor called a special session in Parliament on Monday to prove his majority. Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections, but will issue a summons to the government. So far, six pro-government MLAs have resigned.

At present, the Congress has nine seats, the DMK two, the All India NR Congress seven, the AIADMK four, the BJP three and one independent. Among those who recently resigned is former minister A. Namassiyam, Malladi Krishna Rao.

However, while the confidence-building process was underway, the Congress MLAs walked out by attacking the central government and failed to prove a majority. As a result, there is no Congress government in Puducherry now and the dates for the Assembly elections may be announced in the coming days.
