Apocalypse in Devbhoomi: Glacier rupture wreaks havoc, see grim pictures

Glacier rupture in Chamoli, Uttarakhand has caused major catastrophe. Due to the avalanche, the water level of Dhauliganga river is rising alarmingly and the river banks have been severely damaged.

150 workers working on Rishiganga project are missing after the glacier broke. A shutdown of the Tapovan Vij project has broken down and it is being speculated that they are tense.

ITBP and SDRF personnel have been sent to the affected area to rescue the trapped people. Rishikesh and Haridwar may not be affected but these cities have also been kept on alert.

The system has been in motion since the tragedy and a helpline number has been launched for those trapped. Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat said a disaster has been reported in Chamoli district. Relevant departments including district administration, police and disaster management have been instructed to deal with the situation.

About 150 people from the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga projects are missing in the floodwaters. Power project officials have told Tantra that about 150 workers are missing. Rescue teams have been instructed to search for people.

The Tantra has been asked to remain alert in the Gangetic district after the tragedy. High alert has been issued in Bijnor, Kanauj, Fatehgarh, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Mirzapur, Garhmukteshwar, Ghazipur and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
