After 27 years, no member of Jammu and Kashmir is in the Rajya Sabha again

New delhi date. 16 February 2021, Tuesday

After 27 years in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, there are no more members from Jammu and Kashmir. This is not the first time this has happened. This is after the expiration of the term of four members of Jammu and Kashmir. Similar situation has happened in Rajya Sabha with other states.

The four members who have just completed their term in the Rajya Sabha include Mir Muhammad Fayaz and Niaz Ahmed of the PDP party, Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress and Shamsher Singh of the BJP. However, even in the first years of 1994 and 1996, there was no representative of Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha.

It may be mentioned that on November 21, 2018, the Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was dissolved by the Governor. After that there was to be an assembly election within 6 months but for some reason it could not happen. One of the major reasons for this is the changes in the areas of the legislature. It is possible to hold elections there after delimitation.

While Ladakh is a new union territory, a new assembly is to be formed there as well. Due to the absence of the Assembly in both the constituencies at present, there is not enough basis to elect members of the Rajya Sabha. So for some time the upper house of the country's parliament will be deprived of representatives from these two states.
