Srinagar dated 7th January 2021 Thursday

The Srinagar airport in Jammu and Kashmir was forced to close due to continuous snowfall for the last four to five days. The airport reopened this morning after being closed for four days.

It was learned that the first flight was likely to take off after the snow cleared. The Kashmir Valley region has been experiencing continuous heavy snowfall for the last few days. As a result, the airport was closed and all flights were canceled.

Snow removal operations were carried out on the runway on Wednesday night. With most of the snow cleared, the first flight was expected to depart this morning.

The snowfall stopped for the first time on Wednesday afternoon so work could begin to clear the frozen snow. According to locals, this is the first time this year that so much snow has fallen.

However the Jammu Srinagar National Highway is still not open for traffic. The average snowfall on the highway ranged from two feet to four feet in some places. The Jawahar Tunnel was closed to traffic due to snow.

There was a landslide on the highway. Heavy snowfall also fell in Anantnag district. Roads connecting various districts and roads to district headquarters were also closed due to snowfall. The removal of frozen snow on these roads was in progress.
