Law and order situation in West Bengal worrying: Election Commission

New delhi date. 22 January 2021, Friday

Election Commission officials, including the Chief Election Commissioner, are currently on a tour of West Bengal. The Election Commission held a meeting with West Bengal Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and officials of other departments today, in which the state police chief was also present.

The Election Commission has expressed dissatisfaction over the report given by the police on the state of law and order in the state. After the meeting, Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that all political parties have also expressed concern over the state of law and order in the state. There are also fears that communal harmony in the state is being eroded. Thus special arrangements have to be made to maintain law and order in the state.

He said that as a part of which the number of voters at each polling station has been reduced from 1500 to 1000. This will increase the number of polling stations in the state to over one lakh. This decision has been made keeping in mind the transition of Kovid as well.

Central security personnel will be deployed at each polling station. Meanwhile, state police officials were also questioned at the meeting by Election Commission officials and the Election Commission was not satisfied with its answers.
