Heavy fog kills 13 in accident, vehicles collide in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal


- Injured more than 18 people, some serious

At least 13 people were killed and 18-19 others injured when a truck loaded with iron boulders collided with more than one vehicle on Tuesday night in dense fog in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Some of the injuries are said to be serious.

The injured were admitted to a hospital in Jalpaiguri for treatment. According to Jalpaiguri ASP Dr Sumant Roy, a truck laden with five boulders was passing by Mayanali on Tuesday night.

The truck was heading towards Maina Goody. At that time, a Tata Magic and another vehicle were coming in the wrong direction from the front. The truck had earlier collided with Tata Magic following thick fog. The boulders in the truck then fell on other vehicles passing by, increasing the severity of the accident.

Thirteen people were killed and eighteen others were injured. The injured were earlier rushed to a nearby hospital. He was then shifted to a major hospital in Jalpaiguri.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck collided with vehicles coming from the wrong side while the boulder-laden truck was overtaking another truck. Police arrested the truck driver.
