West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the Trinamool Congress was a huge banyan tree. Breaking two or four branches will not make any difference.

More than one leader who had been loyal to Mamata for ten years began to leave her. The biggest blow to Mamata came from the departure of her right hand man Sama Shubhendu Adhikari. Shobhendu also resigned from the Trinamool Congress MLA showing his sincerity.

Addressing a rally in Cooch Behar, he said, "It is the decision of our party that whoever does a good job will get a ticket." The rest goes to whoever wants to go. I don’t bow to anyone’s personal pressure.

Along with Shubhendu Adhikari, who had worked tirelessly to bring Mamata to power and had made a significant contribution to the Nandigram movement, some of Mamata's associates had left Mamata. Such people included Mukul Roy, Shobhan Chatterjee, Arjun Singh, Soumitra Khan, Anupam Hajra, Shankardev Manda etc.
