Tata will bid today to buy Air India, 67 years ago Air India was nationalized

- Today is the last day of bidding

New Delhi, 14 December 2020, Monday

The Tata group will today submit its bid to the government to buy back the heavily indebted Air India. Today is the last day to bid to buy this company.

Exactly 67 years ago today, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi nationalized Air India and took over the company from the Tata Group. Apart from Tata, Hinduja and Adani Group also showed interest in buying Air India.

The central government announced the sale of Air India in January this year and is interested in buying it. Bids were sought from such companies. Earlier in 2018, the central government had also announced the sale of Air India. But there is so much debt burden on Air India that no one was willing to buy it in 2018.

This time some people showed interest including Tata Group. According to one estimate, the Tata Group was likely to use its Air Asia India to buy Air India.

Earlier, however, BJP MP Dr Subramanian Swamy had strongly opposed the sale of Air India to the Tata group.
