Live: PM Modi lays foundation stone of new Parliament House, country will get new MP after 100 years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the new Parliament House to be built in Delhi. The new parliament building will be triangular in shape and will be part of the central government's ambitious Central Vista project.



The project will include the construction of the Parliament House as well as the removal of existing offices and residences on both sides of the three-kilometer stretch of highway from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate and the construction of a Joint Central Secretariat and other buildings.


A new Parliament building will also be constructed on the site of the present Parliament House premises. The construction of the new Parliament building is planned to be completed by the year 2022. The Supreme Court had expressed displeasure over the construction of the Central Vista project of the new Parliament House.

The Supreme Court said that the construction under the Central Vista project. Demolition or tree felling should not take place until a final verdict is heard on the pending petitions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the government, assured the court that construction or demolition would not take place. The Supreme Court has since allowed land worship.


The Center has told the court that it will only lay the foundation stone and not do any construction work. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that no sabotage should be done or trees should be cut down. Initially, the court said that we are not giving a stay on the construction of this work but we are only asking not to do enough work at present.
