Today is the birthday of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, whom BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee hailed as Durga. His grandson and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Indiraji's Samadhi Shakti in the capital New Delhi and laid a wreath at his grandmother.

After the untimely death of the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastriji in the 1960s, veteran Congress leaders installed Indira Gandhi, known as a dumb doll, as the Prime Minister on the pretext that she would remain a Kahyagara. But Indira Gandhi tore the Congress in two and nationalized the banks.

With a steely morale, Indira Gandhi fought a war with Pakistan in 1071 to separate East Pakistan and give birth to Bangladesh. However, it was during his rule that corruption took hold and the atmosphere became tense as Lok Nay Jai Prakash Narayan launched an agitation against corruption. Indiraji's election was canceled by the Allahabad High Court and on June 25, 1975, he imposed an internal crisis in the country. After the crisis, Indiraji lost the 1977 elections and for the first time a people's government came to power in the country.

But taking advantage of the Janata Party's internal tensions, Indira overthrew the Janata government and became prime minister again in 1080. As Khalistani militancy spread in Punjab in the 1980s, Indiraji sent troops to expel terrorists hiding in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the highest Sikh pilgrimage site. Among the Sikhs who were offended by the move were Indiraji's bodyguards. Indiraji was shot dead by her own bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
