Rabindranath Singh alias Chintu Singh, an independent candidate from Bihar's Hayaghat assembly constituency in Darbhanga, was shot dead by unidentified assailants late on Thursday night. Doctors at the hospital said her condition was serious.

Still on Thursday evening, the campaign for the third phase of the Bihar Assembly elections was over. As Chintu Singh was getting into his car, the thugs stopped the car and shot him twice. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said Chintu Singh was returning to his village Dugauli after completing his campaign. Meanwhile, he got a call from someone. The thugs then stopped his car in the closet area and fired two shots at him. "We do not know the motive behind the shooting," Superintendent of Police Ashok Prasad said. Chintu Singh comes to his senses and gives information then something is known. Police were investigating the attackers.

With Chintu Singh standing on the Hayaghat seat, the election here has become a battle triangle. Until now, there was only a war between the BJP and the RJD. The BJP fielded Ramchandra Sahu and the BJP fielded Bhola Yadav. But Chintu Singh's wag was very much here. People knew Chintu Singh as a selfless social worker and it was very likely that he would win the Assembly elections.
