Oxford University Corona Virus Vaccine Effective on the Elderly, No Side Effects

London, Thursday 19 November 2020

The Oxford University Corona virus vaccine has produced an immune response in healthy people aged 56-69 and over 70 years. The Lancet published data from a study of 560 healthy people on Thursday. It shows the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine is safe. It also did not have serious side effects.

Scientists say the results are encouraging because older people have a higher risk of COVID-19. So there should be a vaccine that is effective for older people. Dr Maheshi Ramasamy, who is affiliated with the Oxford Vaccine Group, expressed happiness over the good results of the vaccine in older people. Britain has already ordered 100 million doses of the vaccine from Oxford University.

The team of researchers is trying to find out whether this vaccine prevents COVID-19 from developing in humans in a third phase of comprehensive testing. "We are pleased to see that our vaccine is not only useful for older adults, but also produces a similar immune response in young volunteers," said Dr Ramasamy.

The vaccine is being manufactured by the drug company 'AstraZeneca'. "The new results are very gratifying," said Andrew Pollard, president of Oxford's vaccine testing team. It was also found that no adverse results of the vaccine were found in this phase trial. A report on the second phase of the vaccine trial on Thursday said that the 18-55, 56-79 age group and volunteers over 70 years of age involved similar antibody and T cells in the trial.
