Kunal Kamara case: Parliamentary committee told Twitter, why not take action yet

New Delhi, Thursday 19 November 2020

A joint parliamentary committee on data protection has asked Twitter why the company has not yet taken any action against comedian Kunal Kamra's offensive tweet about the Chief Justice of the Government of India.

A parliamentary committee headed by Meenakshi Lekhi questioned on Twitter the delay in proceedings against an objectionable tweet about Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobade. Twitter said the company could not delete Kamara's tweets unless the court issued an order.

The committee headed by Meenakshi Lekhi has asked Twitter to submit a report on the case within 7 days, although there is no law in India in this regard, so we have to talk to top officials of the company, Lekhi said. Is allowing his platform to be abused.

Kamra had literally attacked the Supreme Court over granting bail to TV anchor Arnab Goswami in a suicide case, and opposed granting bail to Arnab, after which contempt of court proceedings were initiated against him, two law students and two lawyers attorney. General KK wrote a letter to Venugopal seeking permission to prosecute the contempt of court case, which Venugopal granted.

Kamra tweeted about the court approving a contempt case against him and said he would neither delete his tweet nor apologize to anyone.
