Judges need to be educated: Attorney General Venugopal

(PTI) New Delhi, Ta. 2
Attorney General KK Venugopal, while arguing in the Supreme Court, lamented that judges need to be educated. In a case of sexual harassment, the Attorney General had sharply argued that a Madhya Pradesh court judge had granted bail to the victim on condition that the accused be bound in ashes.
A Madhya Pradesh High Court judge has granted bail on a bizarre condition in a sexual harassment case. The judge had conditioned the victim to tie the ashes in return for granting bail to the accused. An application was filed in the Supreme Court against the bail granted to the accused. In that case, Attorney General Venugopal had argued in the Supreme Court.
The attorney general argued that if bail was granted in such a way, the judges' understanding would have to be reconsidered. He said judges need to be educated. Venugopal called what the Madhya Pradesh High Court judge did a drama. He said the decisions of the Supreme Court should be taught in the courts of the country. This will tell judges working in the lower courts and the high court what they need to do.
Presenting arguments in the Supreme Court, Venugopal stressed that judges also need to be taught gender sensitivity. The terms of bail should be factual and logical. Emotions should have no place in it. It is not appropriate for a judge to make decisions in court out of emotion or out of tradition.
