New Delhi, dated 11 October 2020, Sunday

Construction of Asia's largest 14.2 km long tunnel connecting Leh and Srinagar, the capital of Ladakh, will begin on October 15. It will be inaugurated by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The 14.2 meter long tunnel will be strategically important. Just as the Rohtang Pass will remain open for 12 months due to the Atal Tunnel, the tunnel on the Jozilla Pass will connect Leh to the rest of the country through Jammu and Kashmir for 12 months. It is expected to be ready.

The Jozilla Pass is located at an altitude of 3000 meters. Its strategic importance has increased due to the tension between China and India. That is why our journey between Srinagar and Leh is possible. This road is one of the most dangerous roads in the world.

With the construction of the tunnel, the journey of 3 hours can be completed in 15 minutes. With the passage of time, fuel will also be saved. The construction of the tunnel will also create employment opportunities at the local level. The tunnel is expected to cost around Rs 4,500 crore. Along with this, 18 km long approach road will also be constructed. The tunnel will have side walk on both sides, facilities like fire alarm push button, portable fire equipment, telephone will be inside the tunnel. CCTV will be installed and a central control room will be set up to monitor the tunnel.
