Violent clashes in the border areas of Assam and Mizoram states in northeast India since Saturday evening left several people with minor to major injuries. Authorities, however, claimed that the situation was under control.

The clashes took place in Kolasib district of Mizoram and Kachar district of Assam. Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamaliana said Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla would hold a meeting with the Chief Secretaries of the two states today.

The Kolasib district police chief said some people from Assam pelted stones at a rickshaw stand outside a village in the border area on Saturday evening. As a result, the other side also resorted to violence. A good crowd had gathered. Police were investigating the cause of the violence. The clash reportedly lasted for hours.

Assam Forest Minister Parimal Shukla Vaidya said there were regular clashes here every season during the season as the two sides were illegally cutting down trees in each other's areas. Currently the situation is under control and there is no cause for concern.
