Srinagar Dat. 27 October 2020 Tuesday

PDP chairperson and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's recent statement on the country's tricolor flag had caused a rift in her party and three members of the party resigned from the party on Monday.

The news was confirmed by a PDP spokesperson who said that the party had formally announced the resignation of senior party leaders TS Bajwa, Hasan Ali Wafa and Ved Mahaj from the PDP party membership.

Mehbooba, who has been in custody since August 4-5 last year, was released two days before his detention hearing in the Supreme Court. He had publicly stated that he would not touch or salute any flag other than the flag of Jammu and Kashmir. He also announced that we (the organized opposition) would at any cost restore Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

His statement on the national flag was also sharply criticized by the country's main opposition Congress. The BJP termed the statement as treason. His statement also provoked protests in the PDP party. On Monday, three party leaders resigned.
