New Delhi Dated 26th October 2020 Monday

A total of three people, including former Union Minister Dilip Ray, convicted in the coal scam, were sentenced to three years in jail. The three were found guilty during the previous hearing but were absent from the hearing.

The court asked the three to appear in person at the next hearing. Today, the three convicts were sentenced to three years in prison.

It may be recalled here that a CBI probe was underway against several people, including Dilip Ray, in connection with the 1999 scam at the Brahmadiha coal mine in the Giridih area of Jharkhand. The three were convicted by a special CBI court in a hearing on October 6. As these people were not present in the hearing, the court urged them to be present in the hearing on Monday, October 26, i.e. today.

The CBI had advocated life imprisonment for the scammers but the accused's counsel argued that the accused had no criminal record, which was their first offense and should be given some leeway.

Earlier, Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda had also been convicted. In addition to the three-year jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh. Former Kham ministry secretary HC Gupta was also sentenced to three years in jail and fined Rs one lakh.
