'Babri fell for power, not for religion': Famous documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan

Internationally acclaimed documentary writer Anand Patwardhan said the Babri Masjid was demolished to gain power in the country. It has nothing to do with Ram temple or religion.

Anand has been making progressive documentaries since 1978. Some of his best known documentaries include Kranti Ki Tarange, Jamir Ke Bandi, Ram Ke Naam, Father, Sun and Holy War and Jai Bhim Comrade.

He made a documentary called Ram Ke Naam during the Ram Mandir movement started by BJP's L Krishna Advani in the 1990s. That is why he had a good time in Ayodhya. The 75-minute film covered the agitation to build a Ram temple in place of Babri and the ensuing violence, as well as the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Released in 1992, the film won the National Award for Best Investigative Film. He also received two international awards.

In the documentary Ram Ke Naam, Mahant Lal Das, a priest of the Ram temple, is seen saying that whatever these people do, they do to gain power and earn money. It has nothing to do with religion.
