The quake was followed by a tsunami alert in the Pacific Ocean. In some places, waves one and a half to two meters high were also raised. However this warning was later converted into advisory.
According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the epicenter was 41 kilometers below the earth's surface and 94 kilometers from the city of Sand Point. The tremors were intense. A tsunami alert was issued for Unimac from the Candy Entrance. The epicenter was reported below the ground, however; no tsunami alert was issued. This was followed by two more shocks of greater intensity.
The National Weather Service has warned people living in coastal areas to be vigilant as there will be strong waves and tidal currents in the sea.
