A number of people around the world and in India have found a new kind of livelihood following the app-based economy. The term 'Gig Economy Workers' has become synonymous with drivers of app-based cabs and delivery persons of various online delivery services.

As per the news received now, the government of India has drafted a social security policy which also covers such gig workers.

The Union Cabinet has approved the draft and it will be put to Parliament for approval in the monsoon session of Parliament. If the bill becomes law, Gig workers will get insurance and other benefits under the Employees State Insurance Corporation, which is run by state governments.

Usually people working for a company like Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Ola etc. are not considered employees of such company but the company identifies them as its partners. As the whole field is totally unorganized, so is the field of freelancers working with technology.

Such people get almost no insurance or other benefits and their income fluctuates constantly. Now their condition is expected to improve if they are covered by labor laws.
