The Railways itself had filed the petition and told the court that many huts were very close to the railway tracks and some were even two storeys high. Because of this, motormen driving trains are afraid of accidents and sometimes there was a good chance of a serious accident.

The Railways had also informed the court that the Railways had constituted a special task force to remove this illegal encroachment and work had also been started to remove this slum. We had to stop this operation due to political pressure. The court noted this and said that no political interference should be allowed when the slums are being removed.

Not only in Delhi, but also in Mumbai, there are thousands of huts adjoining the railway tracks. Every political party allows this slum to remain as its vote bank even though it is illegal.
