New Delhi Dated 4th September 2020 Friday

The Supreme Court is to rule today on whether to take the NEET 2020 exams or not. The chief ministers of the six states had moved the apex court seeking an order directing the central government to postpone the NEET 2020 exam as it was not possible to conduct it in Koro's tenure.

The central government and especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clarified that since more than eight lakh students had obtained online admit cards, it was no longer possible to postpone the NEET 2020 exam. Meanwhile, the JEE exams had started. However, obstacles came. On Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that 75 per cent students in my state could not reach for the G exam. The exam needed to be postponed. However, the Gini exam had already started.

The states had applied to the Supreme Court to postpone the NEET 2020 exam. The Supreme Court is due to give its verdict today. There are non-BJP governments in six states. Earlier, the apex court had upheld the Centre's decision to hold both the exams. Six states had applied for reconsideration.

The petition was filed before Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari. The six states that applied for reconsideration included Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Lawyer Sunil Fernandes was fighting the case on behalf of the six states.

It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court will uphold its earlier judgment or issue a new one.
