Will Sonia Gandhi resign as Congress president? There is speculation in the party about leadership

New Delhi, 23 August 2020 Sunday

Amid ongoing political speculation over the Congress party's leadership, sources said Sonia Gandhi may resign as the party's interim chairperson. A meeting of the Congress Working Committee is going to be held on Monday. According to sources, this announcement may be made in it. After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of party president last year, taking responsibility for the defeat of the Congress.

Sonia Gandhi has been the party's interim president for more than a year since then. Now the question is, if Sonia Gandhi leaves the post of party president, who will run the party? In this, a section of the party is in favor of Rahul Gandhi's re-election as president. However, a few days ago, Priyanka Gandhi stressed on political speculation that the party's bow could go to a member of the Gandhi family.

However, the demand for Rahul Gandhi to be the party's president once again is growing rapidly. Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said Sonia Gandhi should hold the post for as long as she wants. Then Rahul Gandhi should become the president. Similarly, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Badhel said that Rahul Gandhi should become the party president again.

Within the party, there is a demand for selection of chairman and members of the working committee. In this regard, Salman Khurshid said that instead of holding internal elections, the Congress should once again give a chance to consensus.

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal said the meeting of the Congress Working Committee on August 24 would be held at 11 a.m. via video conferencing. It may be mentioned here that in the last meeting, the issue of the party's defeat in the 2019 general elections was raised by some MPs and there was a heated discussion. The meeting of the working committee on Monday has become very important.

After the 2019 general elections, some leaders wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi demanding a change of leadership and elections for a working committee. Expelled Congress spokesperson Sanjay Zai said that 100 Congress leaders, including MPs, had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi seeking a change of leadership. However, the party has denied receiving any such letter.
