The Supreme Court fined Prashant Bhushan Rs 1 for contempt of court

New delhi date. 31 August 2020, Monday

In a contempt of court case against lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who was convicted for tweeting against the judiciary, the Supreme Court has slapped a fine of Rs 1 on him. And if they do not pay the fine, they will be sentenced to 3 months in prison and will not be able to practice law for 3 years.

On August 25, Justices Arun Mishra, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari reserved their sentence for refusing to apologize for tweets made by Prashant Bhushan.

Earlier, the panel had referred to Prashant Bhushan's refusal to apologize for his tweet, saying "what is wrong with apologizing?" Are these words all that bad? During the hearing, the panel also gave Bhushan 30 minutes to reconsider his stance in return for not regretting the tweet.

Let me tell you that lawyer Prashant Bhushan allegedly tweeted insultingly on 4 former CJIs of the Supreme Court. Which is considered contempt of court. The move was taken spontaneously (suo moto) by the court.

There are two types of court contempt proceedings - civil and criminal. Prashant Bhushan was charged with criminal contempt. Prashant Bhushan was seen making more than one tweet mocking some of the Supreme Court judgments. After such repeated tweets, the Supreme Court raised the weapon of contempt of court.

Senior legislator is Prashant Bhushan

Prashant Bhushan himself is also a senior legislator. He may have his own opinion on certain issues. But it is not appropriate to dismiss or criticize a Supreme Court judgment. If you do not accept a judgment, you can appeal for reconsideration, but the judgment or the judge's thinking cannot be criticized on social media. For the last few days, Prashant Bhushan has been constantly tweeting about the Supreme Court judgments.
