Massive demonstrations took place in Muzaffarabad on Monday against China's move to build dams on the Neelam and Jhelum rivers in POK. Protesters took to the streets with torches in hand. In addition to Daria Bachao, Muzaffarabad Bachao, slogans like Neelam Jhelum Ko Bahne Do, Hamein Jine Do were shouted.

China and Pakistan recently signed an agreement on the Kohala Hydropower Project and the Azad Pattan Hydel Power Project in POK. The people of POK are not going to benefit from this hydropower project. On the contrary, Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas were likely to face water shortage and other problems due to obstruction of the river. That is why people have been taking to the streets frequently for the last few days. A Chinese company is to build a dam on the Neelam-Jhelum river. The closure is part of China's ambitious CPAQ plan.

The project is being built at a cost of about US 1.5 1.5 billion. The entire project is planned to be completed in 2022. It is estimated that the project will generate only three per cent of Pakistan's annual electricity generation. Originally, under the pretext of this project, China was in the process of making Pakistan more prosperous.

Pakistan has borrowed એક 1.13 billion from abroad for the project. The remaining amount will be raised through equity. The loan was guaranteed to be repaid in eighteen years by the lender.

However, given Pakistan's current economic situation, it is unlikely that it will be able to repay the debt in another eighteen or twenty-five years. China knows this fact but was not ready to miss the opportunity to make Pakistan an oasis.
