Railways collects Rs 1 crore in 1 year from 1 crore passengers traveling without tickets

Railways has collected crores from those who travel without tickets in trains. According to an RTI report, in 2019-20, the railways caught more than 1 crore passengers traveling without tickets on whom the railways have levied fines of Rs 561.73 crore.

According to the information received by the railway department, between the years 2016-20, a fine of Rs 1,938 crore was levied on people traveling without tickets. This is 38.57% more than in 2016.

According to RTI, the railways earned Rs 405.30 crore in 2016-17. While in the year 2017-18, the railways collected Rs 441.62 crore from such people and in the year 2018-19, it earned Rs 530.06 crore.

Indian Railways has enacted a rule to ban travel without a ticket. A minimum penalty of Rs 250 is charged along with the cost of such travel ticket. If a passenger refuses to pay the fine, the person is handed over to the Railway Security Force and a case is registered against him under Section 137 of the Railway Act. The person is then produced before a magistrate. The magistrate can impose a fine of up to one thousand rupees. If a person fails to pay the fine, he could face up to six months in prison.
