The country's senior and learned legislator Prashant Bhushan was convicted by the Supreme Court in a contempt of court case. His sentencing hearing will take place on August 20, the court said. Prashant Bhushan tweeted against Chief Justice SA Bobade and the Supreme Court on June 27. Earlier in 2009, Prashant Bhushan had said in a meeting that fifty per cent of former judges were corrupt. He also frequently criticized Supreme Court rulings. His argument was that in a democracy every citizen had the right to criticize court rulings. Even a judge is a man after all. They can also make mistakes. The court repeatedly warned them that you tweet in a way that is detestable to the Supreme Court which is not appropriate.

Senior advocate Dushyant Dave, on behalf of Prashant Bhushan, argued that it was natural for a judge to make man-made mistakes. The judiciary should not punish anyone for instinctive and honest criticism. At the last hearing, Prashant Bhushan said in his defense that the word "corruption" was not a sign of economic corruption, but of failure to do his job efficiently.

He apologized for his remarks and tweets but the court did not accept the apology. He was now convicted of contempt of court.

However, his sentence was not announced today. The court announced that his sentence would be heard on August 20.

It is worth remembering here that countries around the world have abolished the contempt of court provision from the law. Justice Markandey Katju of the same Supreme Court also sought to repeal this provision from the Indian law.
