Court contempt case: Center urges Supreme Court to pardon Prashant Bhushan

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the appeal of lawyer Prashant Bhushan in the contempt case. Bhushan had today sought an opportunity to avoid a discussion on the sentence and to file a review petition. The Center has urged the court not to give any punishment to Bhushan. On which the court said that they could not consider the request of the Attorney General unless they apologized.

During the hearing the court told the senior counsel that if we sentence you it will not apply until the review decision. We will be fair to you. We think you are trying to escape from this bench. His lawyer said there would be no trouble if the sentence was avoided.

In court, Prashant Bhushan's lawyer Dushyant Dave said the appeal under judicial review was valid and the sentence could be stayed. The court has refused to file a review petition against the sentence for criminal contempt and to avoid hearing on his sentence until a decision is reached. The court said the verdict is finalized only after sentencing.

The apex court had filed a contempt of court case against advocate Prashant Bhushan and Twitter India. The Supreme Court had filed a suo moto case against Prashant Bhushan for making insulting tweets against the judiciary. Activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan was convicted by the Supreme Court on Friday, August 14, for making two insulting tweets against the judiciary.
