After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, Lok Sabha elections were held in the country. In the post-Lok Sabha election results, Pranab Mukherjee was a strong contender for the PM's job, but he may have been overwhelmed by the revolt from the Congress to form the Samajwadi Congress Party. It is believed that loyalists of the Gandhi family prevented him from becoming the Prime Minister.

Elderly and retiring PV Narasimha Rao was made the Prime Minister .He was made the Chairman of the Planning Commission in the Narasimha Rao Government. He was the Finance Minister of the country from 19th to 19th. The country introduced its diplomacy at a time when it was going through a fragile state of WTO and economic liberalization. He was then given the post of External Affairs Minister in place of Finance Minister. Although he had differences with Rajiv Gandhi, he saw the dilemma of the Congress and persuaded Sonia Gandhi to take over the reins of politics.

When the Congress emerged as the largest party in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi refused to become the country's prime minister. However, he chose Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister, replacing an experienced, diplomat and gigantic leader like Pranab Mukherjee. At that time, Pranavada did not let his grief come out but the political pundits were very surprised. Pranab Mukherjee was the Defense Minister in the Manmohan Singh government from 2007 to 2008, the External Affairs Minister from 2008 to 2009 and the Finance Minister from 2009 to 2014. As a veteran Congress leader, he was also a member of the Congress Working Committee for 3 years. Whether in the Rajya Sabha or the Lok Sabha, he was in the role of a troublemaker for the Congress party and the government. His style of presentation was gentle but sharp. The opposition had to work hard to blockade him or break his word because he was not a staunch politician but a stateman. He loved reading, music and gardening.
