Jammu and Kashmir: Tehreek-e-Hurriat chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai arrested

Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested Tehreek-e-Hurriat chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai. Police arrested Sehrai near his residence around 5 p.m. Sehrai is a Kashmiri separatist leader and chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He was elected chairman for the first time in Hurriyat history.

An official told police that Sehrai was arrested this morning. However, it is not yet known in which case this action has been taken against Sehrai. Sehrai was appointed acting chairman on March 19, 2018 by the Majlis-e-Shora of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He was later elected President on 19 August for 3 years.

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai became an associate of Syed Ali Shah Gilani in 1959. Sehrai was first jailed in 1965 for anti-government activities. Sehrai's son Junaid became a Hezbollah militant after studying for an MBA. However, he was shot dead in a recent clash in Srinagar.
