If Muslims can sacrifice, why can't Hindus? Petition in the Supreme Court against the law of Kerala

New Delhi, July 17, 2020, Friday

A petition filed by the Supreme Court on Thursday has questioned the Kerala government's law banning sacrifices in the name of deities in temples.

The petition filed in the Supreme Court said, "If Muslims sacrifice goats on Goat Eid and even animals in the church on special occasions, why can't Hindus sacrifice them?"

The Supreme Court has since shown readiness to examine the constitutionality of the petition. The law on animal and bird sacrifice in Kerala is 52 years old. The law prohibits Hindus from sacrificing animals and birds. The petition was also filed in the Kerala High Court. The petition was rejected on July 16, saying there was no evidence in the petition to prove that the practice of sacrifice was an integral part of the practice of Hinduism.

However, the matter has now reached the apex court. The apex court has shown readiness to hear the questions raised in the petition. Petitioner KV Vishwanath and VG Giri have moved a similar petition in the Himachal Pradesh and Tripura High Courts.

The apex court has issued notice to the Kerala government in the matter.
