Haphazard firing in Chicago, 14 people seriously injured

At least 14 people were injured in the shooting and have been hospitalized for treatment. Chicago police have taken one person into custody in connection with the case.

At least 14 people were injured in the shooting during a funeral on Tuesday evening at Gresham in Chicago, police said. The shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m. in the 1,000 block of 79th West Street. Police have taken one person into custody in connection with the case but no information has been released about the attacker.

A man riding in an SUV fired shots at people attending a funeral on the block, according to a report received by police. People involved in the funeral then also fired haphazard shots and the SUV crashed. At least 14 people were injured in the attack and were admitted to five different hospitals.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said firefighters rushed a total of 11 people from the scene to the hospital. While others were sent to different hospitals. Several people present at the scene were seriously injured and locals said they heard several rounds of gunfire.

Local resident Arnita Gerder said there was an atmosphere of corpses everywhere at the scene. According to him, people were shot all over the place including legs, abdomen, back and it seemed to be a war. Chicago police have launched a search for the motive behind the firing and are taking a man into custody and questioning him.
