Tweak China: Stubbornness left by Nepal, will not show India's share in the map

Kathmandu, Ta. 27 May 2020, Wednesday

Ignoring India's strongest opposition, the Nepalese government unveiled a new political and administrative map of the country, showing a total area of 395 sq km in the Indian territories of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura. However, the rift in political and diplomatic relations with India has receded.

A constitutional amendment was to be tabled in Parliament today to include the pro-Nepal map in the country's constitution. But the Nepalese government at the last minute removed the constitutional amendment proceedings from the agenda of Parliament today.

The proceedings have been suspended for the time being following a mutual agreement between the ruling and opposition parties in Nepal. On Tuesday, Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called an all-party meeting to reach a consensus on the new map issue. In this meeting, the leaders of all the parties talked to India and offered to resolve the issue.

Nepal has taken this step on its own to create an atmosphere of bilateral dialogue with India. The Indian External Affairs Ministry had demanded dialogue with Nepal. Nepal has set an example of diplomatic maturity by not introducing a new map in parliament.
