I swear after taking oath as Rajya Sabha member: Ranjan Gogoi

New delhi date. March 17, 2020, Tuesday

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has accepted the nomination for Rajya Sabha. President Ram Nath Kovind nominated him as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday. Regarding his selection by the President, Gogoi said, 'I will probably come to Delhi tomorrow. First, I take the oath of office as a Rajya Sabha member. Then I will talk to the media from the area about why I did this and why I am going to Rajya Sabha. '

Several political parties, including Congress, have questioned the selection of Justice Gogoi. He said that Gogoi should refuse to go to the Rajya Sabha as it would affect the fairness of the judiciary. Some leaders, on the other hand, advised them to refuse the nomination, reminding them of old statements.

However, in response to criticisms of his Rajya Sabha nomination, Gogoi told a local news channel in Guwahati, "I have accepted the Member's nomination in the Rajya Sabha, because I clearly believe that Parliament and the judiciary should work together on specific issues for the uplift of the nation." My presence in Parliament is similar to the way in which the opinions of the judiciary are expressed in Parliament. However, in this regard, I will speak in more detail after taking oath as a Rajya Sabha member in Delhi, ”Gogoi said.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was the first justice to reach the highest position of the judiciary from the northeastern state. Before retiring, former Chief Justice Gogoi ruled in favor of Hindus in a years-old dispute over the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Ranjan Gogoi, made several major decisions under the Chief Justice. These include requests for inquiry into Sabarimala, Ayodhya temple, Rafale fighter aircraft deal and so on.

Besides, to maintain the glory of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court judge J Ranjan Gogoi raised his voice through a press conference held under the leadership of Chelmeshwar. In January 2018, four judges displeased with the then Chief Justice of India, Deepak Mishra, had a press conference. For the first time in the country's history, Supreme Court judges have come out to the media on internal affairs and indirectly criticized the Modi government.
