Gujarat government has decided to lock down entire Gujarat from 12 noon to 31st March, taking into account the severe situation caused by the epidemic of Kora virus in Gujarat. A decision has been taken tonight to prevent the worsening of the condition due to the death of a patient due to corona virus in Gujarat and the increase in the number of corona virus cases in a single day.

Gujarat Chief of Police Shivanand Jha and Home Secretary Sangeeta Singh announced the decision to seal the border of the entire state at a press conference called at 9 pm. Article 144 has been implemented throughout Gujarat and there has been a threat of strict action against the violator. Due to the lockdown, all operations except for the required services, the movement of private vehicles will be stopped.

Essential services include necessities like medical stores, grocery stores, milk and vegetables, and some government services have been dropped from lockdown.

Precautions are being taken to ensure that there is no shortage of essential items, however, it has been decided to keep the movement of the cargo vessels as per routine. Taxis, cabs, rickshaws, luxury buses, public transport will be closed. Only two persons will be able to travel between two wheelers and four wheelers for the purpose of reducing the movement of private vehicles, two wheelers, four wheelers.

The government has also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police in implementing the decision taken by the government in the interest of the people. Every police station at the local level will also take steps to implement the lock down. The public has also been obliged to contribute to the local police. It has also been announced that legal action should be taken against the non-cooperative along with the police who disobey the government order.

So far 62 persons have been registered for breach of Article 188 notification. 18 persons have been prosecuted under sections 269, 270 and 271 of the Indian Penal Code for the offense of breaking the law by quarantined persons. Six SRPF companies have been allocated separately for effective implementation of lockdown. Also, four companies of Rapid Action Force have been allotted.

A sentence of 6 months may be imposed under Article 188

When a notification is issued by the government and a person breaks the declaration, the police register a crime against it under section 188. The offense provides for a six-month prison sentence.
