Supreme Court approves Delhi High Court verdict on equality of women in Indian army

New Delhi: 17 February 2020, Monday

The Supreme Court upheld the Delhi High Court's ruling on equality of women in the Indian Army.

Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Ajay Rastogi issued the verdict, saying that women are now proved to be male and hence they should get a permanent commission in the army.

The Supreme Court has criticized the central government and said that even though the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Delhi High Court, why has the central government not implemented it?

The court said that promotion of the women's army would be considered an evolutionary step. The judgment delivered by the Delhi High Court is timely and its immediate implementation decreases.

The Delhi High Court last gave the verdict in March 2010. It said that women who have completed 14 years should be given permanent commissions in the Indian Army and they should get the benefits of promotion.

The central defense department challenged the Delhi High Court's ruling in the Supreme Court. He was also criticized by the Supreme Court.
