High court, insufficient PAN card, land or bank documents to prove citizenship in Assam: High Court

Guwahati, Ta. February 18, 2020, Tuesday

Disputes are currently underway to prove citizenship. If the government implements the NRC, there are claims that every citizen of the country will have to provide proof that he is a citizen of this country.

Amidst this situation, the Guwahati High Court has made an observation on the documents required for citizenship, in which the court has said that documents connected with Pancard, Bank or Jamin cannot prove citizenship.

In Assam, 19 lakh people could not prove that they are Indian citizens and any documents they submitted are not suitable for citizenship. Most of these 19 lakh people are Hindus, a woman has appealed to the Guwahati High Court with the claim that she is an Indian citizen.

Meanwhile, Guwahati High Court Divisional Bench Judges Manojit and Parthv Jyoti said that the PAN card, the record of the land, any record of bank account opened, etc. are not sufficient to prove citizenship and these documents do not prove citizenship.

Jabeda Begum, a resident of Baksa district in Assam, was not named in the NRC list, which she later appealed to a foreign tribunal but could not prove her citizenship there. In the meantime, the tribunal's decision was subsequently challenged in the Guwahati High Court.

Although the High Court rejected the appeal, in the midst of the dispute, the woman told the Tribunal that my parents and grandparents were named in the electoral roll, though the tribunal in the High Court claimed that the woman could not produce any such evidence.
