Melville de Melo gave a radio commentary on Gandhi's funeral

Indian radio commentator Melville De Mello gave a running commentary on the radio for 2 consecutive hours on January 3, Gandhi's funeral. It is regarded as one of the best commentaries on the history of radio broadcasting in India and not in the world. The eyes of millions of people who listened to the radio, describing Gandhi's euphemism, were dimmed. After this commentary, De Melo's name was popularized across India. Melville de Melo's distinctive voice had an amazing combination of mood and force. That is why experts believe that no one has been able to reach the height of the radio broadcast that De Melo has achieved.


De Mello's vocal magic inspired many commentators like Jasdev Singh to come into the broadcasting field. De Mello prepared several English-language versions on All India Radio and read English news at 9 pm. This is All India Radio, The News Read by Melville De Mello, was a habit for listeners to hear this sound. Therefore, some were not interested in the news but also used the radio tune to learn how to speak English. This metaphor won the prestigious Italia Prize in the broadcasting world.

He benefited from the professors of Oxford and Cambridge while studying at the Bishop Cotton School in Simla. From his childhood he had a good grasp on the English language and its accents. My father, Late Jasdev Singh, the legendary Hindia braodcaster and commentator, hhas written repeatedly in his autobiography "Main Jasdev Singh Bol Raha Hoon", that he himself was inspired to become a radio commentator in Hindi when he heard the above said commentary by Melville DE Mellow on Gandhi ji's funeral procession, so touching was the commentary. Thus, DeMellow's stellar performance on that day effectively gave All India Radion and the Hindi speaking world, another great commentator, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan Jasdev Singh....
