Despite protests across the country, the Citizenship Investigation Act has been in effect since January 10. Protests are taking place in major cities of the country after the legislation was passed in Parliament. There were rallies in support of this in some cities. The BJP has also launched a campaign to educate the public about this law.


In a gadget notification, the Union Ministry said that the law will come into effect from January 10, under which Indian citizenship will be granted to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The notification states that the Central Government, on the 10th of January 2020, uses the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 1 of the Citizenship (Research) Act, 2019 (47 of 2019) as the date of the provision of the Act. The modified citizenship law was passed by Parliament on December 11.


1. Under this law, minorities from neighboring countries will easily get Indian citizenship.

2. They have to spend at least 6 years here to get citizenship. Earlier, the rule was to spend 11 years for citizenship.

3. Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Jain and Buddhist people of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the surrounding countries who have entered India till December 31, 2014. All of them can apply for citizenship of India.

4. If the OCI card holder violates the rules, then the Center will have the right to cancel his card.
