Gandhi's size bigger than Bharat Ratna: Supreme Court rejects award of award

(PTI) New Delhi, Ta. January 17, 2020, Friday

The Supreme Court has dismissed the public interest petition demanding Gandhi to be awarded the 'Bharat Ratna' award, stating that the countrymen have a very high level of respect for President Mahatma Gandhi, which is more than any formal honor.

Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, a bench comprising Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant, however, has directed the apex applicant, Anildutta Sharma, to present the matter before the Central Government.

Sharma, in his petition, has demanded that the court direct the government to grant Gandhiji India. Mahatma Gandhi is the President. People have a very high level of respect for them, which is greater than any formal appreciation, "a bench of justices said in their decision regarding the application.

"Directing the government to award the Bharat Ratna award to the President is not a fair issue," the bench added, adding that the bench, however, agreed with the applicant's sentiment to pay Mahatma Gandhi an official honor. "We allow you to appear before the central government on this," the bench said, dismissing the application by telling the applicant.
