Citizenship Research Bill to be tabled in Lok Sabha tomorrow

New delhi date. 08 December 2019, Sunday

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will introduce the Citizenship (Research) Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Under this bill there is a provision to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who are victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Home Minister will introduce the bill in the afternoon as per the list of tasks to be carried out in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

The bill is about research into the six-decade-old citizenship statute. After submission, the bill will be discussed and passed. The bill is causing huge protests in the eastern states. A large number of people and many organizations are opposing the bill. Protesters say that it will repeal the provisions of the Assamese Agreement 1985 in which the deadline for the return of illegal refugees to religious discrimination is March 24, 1971.

The NDA government introduced and passed it in the Lok Sabha in its previous term but did not present it to the Rajya Sabha on suspicion of performance in the eastern states. Due to the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha, the period of the bill was also completed. The bill was a promise of BJP's election in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
