The Berlin Wall was broken on November 9, 1989; find out why this wall was built.

New Delhi, November 9, 2019, Saturday

The Berlin Wall was built on 13 August 1961 and was demolished on 9 November 1989. The wall was a barrier between West Berlin and the German Democratic Republics. Due to this wall, Berlin was divided into eastern and western parts for 28 years. When Germany was partitioned after World War II, thousands of artisans and businessmen left East Berlin and moved to West Berlin. Some people left socialist East Germany for political reasons but moved to capitalist West Germany. The purpose of building the Berlin Wall in Teva was to stop these people. The wall was conceived by the administration of Walter Ulbricht and approved by the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

It's been 30 years since the wall was broken. If you want to see remnants of the Cold War, it is best to go on an approximately 160 km long Berlin Wall Trail. This is a round tour so this trip can be started from anywhere. Another attraction of this trail is the East Side Gallery. Many international artists have painted the surviving 1.3 kilometer long wall in the 1990s. Over 300 watch towers were built to keep an eye on this wall. Guards were watching over the border to prevent people from going from one side to the other. At present some of those towers are still alive. At first the tower was wide square, but since 1966, mushrooms have been shaped.

The most famous crossing point between East and West Germany is Checkpoint Charlie. Tourists stop here and take selfies with artists dressed in soldier costume. Here are lines on cobblestone that allow viewers to know the location of the Berlin Wall. This is how 40 km of the city passes through it. Most East and West Germans wanted to destroy this wall that was demolished on November 9, 1989.
