So far, 60,000 BSNL-MTNL employees have applied for VRS

More than 60,000 people from BSNL and MTNL have already applied for VRS, Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash said in a statement.

Since the announcement of VRS, the number of employees taking VRS has been steadily increasing. As of this afternoon, 40,000 employees had applied for VRS, which had increased to 57,000 by evening.

The publication has told reporters that a total of 60,000 BSNL and MTNL employees have applied for VRS so far. If only BSNL is talking about 57,000 of the 60,000 employees.

The publication says that VRS policy is getting strong support. The government aims to have 94,000 employees take VRS. Last month, the government announced a revival package of Rs 69,000 crore for BSNL and MTNL.

BSNL Chairman and Managing Director PK Purawar told reporters that by noon, 40,000 employees had applied for VRS which had increased to 57,000 by evening. According to sources, BSNL has a total staff of 1.50 lakh and out of that one lakh employees are eligible for VRS.

VRS has been launched from November 5 and will continue till December 3. The government claims that the scheme will reduce BSNL's salary by Rs 7,000 crore.
