Now the judge of the five-judge college of the Supreme Court Bhanumati has also been included. Ranjan Gogoi has retired from the post of Chief Justice, following which he has also relinquished the post of collegium. After which one of the five members was vacant, R Bhanumati has been chosen.

It is noteworthy that for the first time in 13 years, a female judge has been inducted into the Supreme Court's college. Earlier in 2006, Judge Ruma Pal had been a member of the collegium for three years, after retiring, no female judge has held the post.

Bhanumati, a resident of Tamil Nadu, has been made a member of the collegium as he is currently involved in the senior five judges in the Supreme Court. That means the four most senior judges, including Chief Justice Bobde, are also members of the collegium.

After Bobde and Bhanumati, the other three judges are Judge NV Ramana, Judge Arun Mishra and RF Nariman. Bhanumati will retire in July in 2020, though he will remain a member of the collegium till then. The Collegium is generally an independent constitutional body, ranging from the selection of judges to other important court decisions.
