Indian Home Ministry has terminated OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) status by author and journalist Atish Taseer for allegedly hiding important details. British-born writer Atiish Ali Tasir kept the details of his father's Pakistani origin from the government secret.

A Home Ministry spokesman said that according to the Citizenship Act 1955, Taseer was ineligible for the OCI card. The person whose parents or grandparents are from Pakistan cannot get an OCI card and Tasir kept the details of his father's Pakistani origin from the government secret.

A government spokesman further said that Taseer (38 years) did not explicitly meet basic needs and hid information. According to the Citizenship Act, if a person is found to have received an OCI card by fraud, fraud or concealing the truth then his / her registration as OCI card holder is canceled.

In addition, he is blacklisted and his entry into India will be banned in the future. Notably, Taseer is the son of late Pakistani leader Salman Taseer and Indian journalist Tawleen Singh.

Since the Home Ministry spokesman wrote an article in Athish, the government was thinking of canceling its OCI, saying it was groundless. The article criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a tweet responding to the Home Ministry's cancellation of his OCI card, Atish Taser said he had received not just 21 days but 24 hours to respond.
